Principal's Message
Dear DMS Families,
I am humbled and excited for the opportunity to serve as the Interim Principal for the second semester. In my 28th year at DMS, my pride for Decatur Township runs deep. The adolescent years can be quite a rollercoaster for many students, with so many developmental changes in such a short period of time. Our staff are dedicated to the education of all students, building strong relationships, and providing them a safe place to land every day. That safe place often comes with a strong sense of belonging to their school and community.
We watch over 400 students participate in athletics, 220 students participate in band, 130 are in choir and dozens of students participate in various after school clubs. I sat in awe last spring at our end of the year awards ceremony as we celebrated over 650 students for all their accomplishments throughout the year. It was a very strong reminder of how many wonderful things are happening here and what a culture of success we are continuing to build.
There is overwhelming joy for us when former students come in now as parents of a middle school student, showing that your pride also runs deep. I chose Decatur Township for my own children’s education. I have a front row seat to see the dedication our staff have for student support and success, as well as the determination and resilience our students bring. What a privilege to be part of such a powerful partnership!
As we work together with students and families to stress the importance of attendance and education, please continue to stay involved. As independent as they try to be, our students need a supportive adult now more than ever.
Reach out, ask questions and let’s continue the rich tradition of Decatur Middle School.
Go Hawks!
Mrs. Harvey
