Decatur Central High School has named Mr. Tim Cox as the 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year.
Mr. Cox is a proud Ft. Wayne native who attended Northrop HS and the Interlochen Music Camp. He graduated from Ball State University with a degree in Music Education and later earned a Master’s degree in Instrumental Conducting from the same institution. This is his 20th year at Decatur Central as Director of Bands and his 25th year of teaching overall. Mr. Cox has served on the ISSMA state board of directors and marching band committee. He is currently working with DePauw University to develop and enrich their student teaching process. Mr. Cox was selected as the 2018 Teacher of the Year at Decatur Central High School and by the national publication School Band and Orchestra for their December 2017 issue as one of “50 Directors Who Make a Difference.” Mr. Cox would like to thank his parents, and wife Carrie, and their kids Evan and Emily for their unconditional love and support.
Decatur Central provides a well-rounded music education for all students. The Band Department consists of two Concert Bands, two Jazz Ensembles, Percussion Ensemble, Marching Band, two Winter Guards, Indoor Percussion Ensemble, two basketball pep bands, and an Indoor Winds group. The band has traveled and competed in many major national events including the Indianapolis 500 parade, Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day parade, WGI World Championships, and numerous BOA events. The DCHS Band Department has also received many awards, such as the ISSMA All-Music Award, ISSMA Marching Band State Finalists, Four-time Indiana Percussion Association State Champions, WGI Regional Champions, BOA Regional Finalists, and WGI National Finalists and this year won the Concert Class A World Championship. For the past two years, the Winter Guard was State Runner-up and this year won the Bronze Medal at WGI World Championships in Class A. The top Jazz Ensemble (2010) and Percussion Section (2018) were featured at the Indiana Music Educators Association State Conference. Our newly formed Indoor Winds group was Bronze Medalist at the WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio in 2017 and placed 5th this year.
