DCHS and Gold Academy Students Team to Make a Positive Change in Our Community

The Choice Academy's PEP class collaborated with the Gold Academy 6th graders  for a global project focusing on human rights and social justice.

Members of the Choice Academy’s Political and Economic Philosophy Class (PEP) teamed up with the 6th graders of the Gold Academy Elementary for the annual Global Youth Service Day Event on May 3rd and 4th.  Students in the PEP class studied the United Nation’s Declaration of Human Rights and created documentaries, activities, and service projects to present to the 6th grade students at the Gold Academy.  This two day event was also highlighted by the Police vs. Fire Charity Basketball game that took place May 3rd.  Over 150 attended and $325 was collected to help the police and fire departments build community relations. The police team lead by DCHS 2006 graduate, Chase Lyday and the Fire team was organized by DCHS 2007 graduate, Andrew Park. The police won last year but the fire department came back and won by 2 points at the buzzer!

Totals from the Global Youth Service Day projects with the Gold Academy and the Police vs Fire Charity basketball game are below:

  • Child Soldiers - got over a hundred individuals to give their hand print to the Red Hand campaign.
  • Child Labor - received 43 toys to send to Vietnamese orphanages.
  • Word Hunger - collected $165 to purchase a Goat and a flock of Hope (birds) through Heifer International to third world countries.
  • No public schools - 230 supplies to Teacher's Treasures
  • Social Injustice - Raised $325 from the Police vs Fire Charity Basketball game.  Roughly 150 people in attendance.  Will be donated to both agencies for their needs.

This was an amazing 2 day event and our students and teachers should be Decatur Proud!  The more we work together, the more untied our community will be!  We are Decatur Township; We are Decatur Proud!
