Decatur Central HS is pleased to announce its participation in Goodwill’s sixth annual Township Youth Donation Drive, running throughout the month of January. Students, parents and neighbors of our school are encouraged to donate at least two 13-gallon bags or copier boxes filled with clothes, books, toys, electronics and other goods to local Goodwill stores. Donors can bring larger items such as furniture, too.
Our school will receive credit any time a donor tells a Goodwill employee that the donation is in support of a specific, participating school.
“For six years now, this drive has represented the start of our donation collection for the year,” said Eric Schlegel, Goodwill’s vice president of retail operations. “Winter is always a difficult time for donations. The weather isn’t great, and a lot of folks have already donated at year-end. These January donations from area schools are critical in offsetting the typical effects of winter. We can’t thank the schools and families enough for their support.”
Encouraging students to donate sends a positive message at an early age, according to Schlegel.
“One of the things I love about Goodwill is how we find ways to generate something good from almost every donation we receive,” he said. “So many items go into the trash – into the landfills – items that have value to someone else in the community. Goodwill can make something positive happen with those items. We create jobs and generate revenue to fund our programs and services. What these students are doing is environmentally conscious and socially conscious, too.”
Goodwill has more than 2,000 employees in its retail operations, and many face employment barriers ranging from disabilities to limited education. The collection and sale of donated goods allows Goodwill to provide jobs and services to its employees and others.
Every donation counts in Decatur Centrals' push to be among the top donors. Schools from several Marion County townships are participating this year.
