MSD Decatur Township students in grades K-8 had the opportunity to attend 5 weeks of free summer school in June and July. Students worked hard to solidify learning in language arts, reading, and math, while also experiencing activities for enrichment in science, art, and physical education. Summer School was made possible by a grant from the United Way, also supported by the Mind Trust and Lavinia Group.
Ms. Devan Heiber led the program in grades 7-9 and shared that, “Especially at this level, summer school really gives an opportunity to support the transition to middle and high school for students. With small group instruction and small class sizes, we can close learning gaps and prepare students for the next level.”
At the elementary level, Mrs. Kelli McGuffey, Lead Administrator, reiterated the importance of summer learning for boosting student achievement, stating, “The Lavinia curriculum provided exposure to many different cultures and engaged students in the learning process.” Mrs. McGuffey added that, “Summer school has been a great learning experience for me. I’ve enjoyed getting to know students from around the district and working with a great team every day that is here for the kids!”
